Testing Services

At Sugar Bend Center we offer several different assessment options described below. Knowing exactly what kind you need is sometimes hard to figure out.  But we are here to help.  Beginning with your initial conversation with our front office staff through the parent intake appointment with Dr. Jennifer Crawford you will have a clear idea of what testing will be provided and what questions will be addressed.

Neuropsychological Testing

Getting to Know Your Child's Strengths and Struggles

Neuropsychological Assessment (also called Testing) is a specialized type of assessment that helps us understand how your child's brain functions and how those functions influence the way your child thinks, feels, and navigates daily life. It’s not a quick quiz or a computer test — it’s a thoughtful, one-on-one evaluation conducted by a neuropsychologist, Dr. Jennifer Crawford, who is trained to explore the connection between brain processes and behavior.

During the evaluation, your child will complete a variety of tasks that assess areas such as attention, memory, problem-solving, language, and emotional functioning. The specific tests are selected based on your unique concerns — for example, some children come in because they are having trouble concentrating or remembering things, while others may be struggling in school, feeling “foggy” after an illness or injury, or wondering whether ADHD, autism, or a learning difference could be part of the picture.  Depending on your child's age and particular needs, neuropsychological testing may assess:

  • Intelligence
  • Attention
  • Social Skills
  • Planning and Organization
  • Academic Achievement
  • Fine Motor Development
  • Processing Speed
  • Emotional Functioning
  • Memory
  • Visual-Spatial Skills
  • Impulsivity
  • Language Function
  • Behavior
  • Problem Solving
  • Self-Help Skills

After the testing is complete, Dr. Crawford will carefully analyze the results and meets with you to explain what the findings mean in clear, everyday language. You will receive a comprehensive report and tailored recommendations to guide treatment, school supports, or workplace accommodations — whatever is most relevant to your child.

ADHD Evaluations for Children and Teens

What's Going On with Focus?

At Sugar Bend Center, we understand how challenging it can be when a child or teen is struggling to focus, stay organized, or keep up at school. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can look different for every child — for some, it shows up as constant motion and impulsivity, while for others, it’s quiet distraction, forgetfulness, or daydreaming. Our ADHD evaluations are designed to look beyond symptoms alone, helping families understand what’s really going on and how to best support their child.

An ADHD evaluation includes a thorough review of developmental, medical, and school history, interviews with parents and the child, and objective testing that measures attention, executive functioning, memory, and learning. We also gather input from teachers or other caregivers to see how your child functions in different settings. This comprehensive approach allows us to distinguish ADHD from other conditions that can look similar — such as anxiety, learning differences, or mood disorders — and to create clear, practical recommendations for school, home, and daily life.

Our goal is to give families clarity, understanding, and a plan forward — whether that means behavioral strategies, academic accommodations, therapy, or collaboration with your child’s physician for medical treatment.

Private School Admissions Testing

Helping Your Child With the Right School

Many private and independent schools require cognitive or academic testing as part of their admissions process. At Sugar Bend Center, we provide Private School Admissions Testing for children applying to local Houston-area schools as well as nationally recognized programs. These assessments are conducted by our neuropsychologist, Dr. Jennifer Crawford, using the most current, school-approved testing measures (such as the WPPSI, WISC, or similar assessments).

Our approach is warm, supportive, and child-friendly — we want every child to feel comfortable and confident during the process. The evaluation typically includes tasks that measure thinking and reasoning skills, problem-solving, and learning potential. Once testing is complete, we provide an official report that meets the specific requirements of your child’s prospective school and can be sent directly to the admissions office upon request.

We understand that applying to private schools can feel stressful for both parents and children, so our team works to make the experience smooth, efficient, and positive. We want everyone to feel confident as they move forward with the admissions process.
